The Madras Regiment is one of the oldest regiments in the Indian Army, with its origins dating back to the 1660s: 

 

Formation:- 
The East India Company established the Madras Regiment in the 1660s as the Madras European Regiment to defend the southeast coast of India from the French. 


Major Stringer Lawrence :-
In 1748, Major Stringer Lawrence, a veteran of battles in Spain, Flanders, and the Highlands, was recruited to command the defense of Cuddalore. He structured the regiment into two battalions, one European and one Sepoy India. 


Battle of Assaye :- 
The regiment's first major conflict was the Battle of Assaye in 1803, where they won a decisive victory against the Peshwa Army. After the battle, the regiment was awarded the elephant-crest as its insignia. 


World War I
The regiment raised eight new battalions to fight in World War I. 


After independence
After independence, the infantry battalions of the Travancore “Nair Pattalam”, Cochin and Mysore State forces were amalgamated into the Madras Regiment. 


3rd Madras Regiment
In October 1945, the 3rd Madras Regiment became simply The Madras Regiment. 
The Madras Regiment has participated in many military campaigns, including the Carnatic Wars, the Anglo-Mysore Wars, and the Anglo-Maratha Wars.
